Aprons came into being out of need as a utilitarian outer garment to cover mostly the front of the body for sanitary reasons in addition to protecting the wearer’s clothes from soiling, wear and tear.  Aprons are a reminder of our past; grandmothers and mothers of another generation, but also are worn for practical purposes and are worn by women of all social levels.  Aprons fell out of fashion in the late 20th century as more women began to work outside the home, and more men began to participate in housework and cooking.  Aprons are back in a big way.
